Do Nicotine Pouches Wreck Your Sleep?
Nicotine within four hours of bedtime cost 1.74 percent of sleep efficiency and added six minutes awake during the night, measured by actigraphy across 5,164 nights. Among people with insomnia symptoms it cost 42 minutes of sleep. Caffeine, measured the same way in the same study, showed no significant effect on anything. Nobody has run that study on nicotine pouches specifically.
What the actigraphy study actually found
The study is Evening intake of alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine: night-to-night associations with sleep duration and continuity by Christine E. Spadola, Na Guo, Dayna A. Johnson and colleagues, published in Sleep in 2019 as part of the Jackson Heart Sleep Study.
785 participants wore wrist actigraphy for an average of 6.7 nights each and kept a nightly diary of what they had consumed within four hours of going to bed. That is 5,164 nights of measured sleep matched to same-day intake, which is what makes it different from asking people how they slept.

And the number that carries the article: among participants with insomnia symptoms, evening nicotine was associated with 42.47 minutes less sleep (95% CI −73.37 to −11.56).
Caffeine lost to nicotine, and that is the surprising part
Almost everyone with a sleep problem audits their coffee first. In this cohort, coffee was not the thing.
Caffeine within four hours of bed produced no significant association with sleep efficiency, wakefulness or duration. Every confidence interval crossed zero. Nicotine produced significant effects on two of the three, and a large one in the group that could least afford it.
That is one cohort, in one population, and it does not mean caffeine is harmless for you personally. It does mean that a person cutting coffee at 4pm while taking a pouch at 10.30pm has probably optimised the wrong variable.
Your evening pouch is not the only one that counts
The timing advice everyone gives assumes nicotine leaves your system between doses. It mostly does not.
In Nicotine Chemistry, Metabolism, Kinetics and Biomarkers, Neal L. Benowitz, Janne Hukkanen and Peyton Jacob III report a plasma half-life averaging about two hours — and then the consequence of that, which is the part that gets left out:
“Based on a half-life of 2 h for nicotine, one would predict accumulation over 6–8 h of regular smoking.”
Regular use through the day builds a level that persists across all 24 hours. Measured by urinary excretion, which picks up lower concentrations, the terminal half-life averages 11 hours.
So the afternoon matters. Someone who uses pouches steadily from lunchtime onwards arrives at bedtime on an accumulated level, not on the residue of one pouch. A four-hour gap helps, and it is not the same as arriving at zero.
The 3am wake-up is the withdrawal, not the nicotine
This is the mechanism people rarely have described to them, and it explains the pattern that makes no sense otherwise: falling asleep fine and waking at three.
With a two-hour half-life, someone who takes a last pouch at 10pm is in meaningful withdrawal by the small hours. The narrative review Effects of Nicotine on the Central Nervous System and Sleep Quality by Nihaal Singh, Anil Wanjari and Arya Harshyt Sinha (Cureus, 2023) names this directly as “nocturnal sleep-disturbing nicotine craving”.

Which leaves an uncomfortable symmetry: using nicotine in the evening disturbs the first half of the night, and running out of it disturbs the second.
Where the evidence gets weaker, honestly
Two things pull against the story above, and leaving them out would make this page the same as every other page on the topic.
The randomised evidence is null. A secondary analysis of the ESTxENDS trial by Tamara Scharf and colleagues, published in Sleep in February 2026, followed 831 people randomised to free e-cigarettes plus cessation counselling or counselling alone. At six months there was no significant difference in overall sleep quality on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (adjusted slope −0.20, p = 0.256). Adding a nicotine product did not measurably change how people slept.
The observational evidence has a publication-bias signal. A systematic review by Huma Sulthana and colleagues in Frontiers in Public Health (29 August 2025) pooled 14 cross-sectional studies and found e-cigarette users at higher odds of short sleep, OR 1.38 (95% CI 1.24 to 1.55). The authors flag that every included study was cross-sectional, so causality is not established, and Egger’s test for publication bias came out at p = 0.03.
The honest reading: nicotine close to bedtime has a measured, same-night effect. Whether being a nicotine user makes you a worse sleeper in general is much less settled than the internet suggests.
Nobody has studied pouches and sleep
Not one trial. The nearest evidence is the nicotine research above, plus what is known about how pouches deliver it.
That gap matters more than it sounds, because pouches differ from cigarettes in exactly the way that would affect sleep: they are used in long, quiet stretches rather than in discrete breaks, and a pouch can sit in for 30 to 60 minutes. An evening of three cigarettes and an evening of three pouches are not the same exposure curve, and nobody has measured which one costs more sleep.
What to change, in order
- Move the last pouch four hours before bed. This is the only interval the research tested, so it is the one to start with. Not three, not “a while before”.
- Then look at the afternoon count, because of the accumulation above. If the last one is at 6pm but there were seven between noon and then, the four-hour rule is doing less than it appears.
- Then, and only then, the strength. Nicotine per pouch varies roughly tenfold across the market, which is covered in how strong a nicotine pouch really is. Change one thing at a time or you cannot read the result.
- Give it two weeks before judging. Night-to-night sleep is noisy. A single good or bad night tells you nothing.
The part you have to measure
Every step above depends on knowing when your pouches actually happen, and that is the thing nobody can recall accurately. Pouches get taken in the gaps of a day, which is precisely why the evening ones go unnoticed.

Most likely because the nicotine has worn off. Nocturnal craving is a documented withdrawal phenomenon: with a two-hour half-life, someone who uses nicotine through the evening spends the second half of the night in mild withdrawal. Insomnia is one of the seven withdrawal symptoms listed in the DSM-5.
Does quitting nicotine pouches improve sleep straight away?
Usually not in the first days. Insomnia is a withdrawal symptom, so sleep often gets worse before it gets better, with the peak of withdrawal around day three and substantial improvement over three to four weeks.
Does a weaker pouch help me sleep better?
It has not been tested. What is known is that the nicotine dose from a pouch ranges roughly tenfold between the weakest and strongest products on the market, so the strength decides how much is still circulating at bedtime. The count during the evening matters at least as much, because nicotine accumulates over six to eight hours of regular use.
